THE MASTERY OF ADJECTIVE CLAUSES BY THE SECOND YEAR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS (Case Study: SMA Alwashliyah Medan)



ABSTRACT
This research concerns with the discussion of adjective clauses achievement in English. The problem of this research is ‘How is the students’ ability in using adjective clauses. The objective of this research is to measure how far the students’ ability in using adjective clauses. This research belongs to the descriptive quantitative. The data were collected by using tests of adjective clauses. To get the data, the second year students of SMA Al Washliyah Medan were treated as respondents. The population of this research is the achievement of forty respondents in adjective clauses. After the data were analyzed, it is concluded that the second year students are able to use adjective clauses. It is suggested that the teacher should explain as much as possible abput adjective clauses contextually.

Introduction 

Indonesia has succeeded to take a part English as an important subject that should be learnt by the students. It is started from the Kindergarten, Junior High School up to the university level, family life and workplace. Despite the fact, most Indonesian students graduating from secondary schools are not able to speak English as required although they have learnt it for more than six years at school. In fact, it is assumed that there might be something wrong in learning-teaching process, not only from the students but also from the teacher when teaching English. This research is focused on the structure especially in knowing the students’ ability in using adjective clause. Without ignoring the other part of basic English skill. Structure is an important part to make the right sentence that followed by English role. As fact, the usage of English in adjective clause that hold an important part and much related to reading and writing. Adjective clause is considered important for students because adjective clauses are used as dependent clauses to modify nouns. In other words, adjective clauses do what adjectives do to nouns
